Statement from Our President

The Motherboard would like to clear up some of the recent confusion about the focus of Broad Universe and who benefits from our various services. Since Broad Universe was founded nineteen years ago, our mission has been and continues to be, to promote, celebrate, and encourage women writers in science fiction, fantasy, and horror. This mission has been stated in multiple places on every version of our website and all of our promotional literature. At this time, we are looking to expand that mission to include alternatively gendered writers because we recognize a similar challenge for this group.

Misinterpretation of our website and other printed material including instructions for signing up members, participating in BU programs, and other BU support documents have inadvertently contributed to this confusion and may have prompted members to pass on misinformation to others, adding to the confusion. Updates are coming to all of these areas.

We’ve reviewed our Bylaws, history, and policies, are talking to an attorney, and we will be making changes to our website, social media, and literature to ensure we communicate our long-standing mission, purpose, and goals as an organization as clearly as possible. Broad Universe Statement about Arisia 2019

Broad Universe has been watching the developments and changes with the leadership of Arisia since the public notice of Crystal Huff’s moving blog post. BU had a long and supportive history with Arisia, both with members attending and sitting on panels as well as having a table in the dealer room and hosting events. We watched with concern and interest as events unfolded, especially given our policy on attending conferences with sexual harassment issues. At this time, Broad Universe is planning to attend the Arisia in January 2019 because of the changes we have seen to the Board and the policies they are looking to implement. Knowing that transformation takes time, we will evaluate the results of these changes before committing next year to ensure that true systematic shifts are still ongoing to prevent, effectively investigate, and effectively deal with harassment and assaults as well as clear steps toward creating a safe environment for attendees.
