HAWKMISTRESS!
ISBN: 0-87997-762-0
DAW Books, 1982 (Out of Print)
This book is part of the Darkover series written by the late Marion Zimmer Bradley. The story focuses on Romilly, a young woman who has the MacAran laran that allows her to “connect” with hawks and horses. She leaves her home, rejecting the “kept” life of a noble woman, and faces hardship and danger living life as a man. This is the only Darkover book I’ve read to date and I read it when I was a teenager. I remember really liking Romilly. I was surprised that the book wasn’t about her pursuing some brooding studly prince. She seemed to face the same real life dilemmas that I did. I was expected to live the way my parents wanted but *I* had other desires and dreams that they did not approve of. Even though she could talk with horses and hawks, she still made mistakes, things didn’t come too easily to her and I admired her tenacity.

Four stories bring together monster-movie archetypes as you’ve never encountered them before. The rage of a tormented adolescent is poignantly expressed in “Boobs.” A vampire’s sessions with a psychiatrist become a contest of wills in “Unicorn Tapestry.” Dark magic puts a woman’s ugly insecurities on public display in “Evil Thoughts.” And a beautiful woman exerts an uneasy control over the temper of a monster in the critically acclaimed “Beauty and the Opera or The Phantom Beast.” Suspenseful and thought-provoking, these stories affirm the vitality of these classic demons of our cultural imagination.

Cursed by God, hunted by demons, desired by Cain and Abel… All in a day’s work. For Evangeline Hollis, a long-ago fling with a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks just became a disaster of biblical proportions. One night with a leather-clad man of mystery has led to a divine punishment: the Mark of Cain. Thrust into a world where sinners are drafted to kill demons, Eve knows her learning curve must be short. A longtime agnostic, she begrudgingly maneuvers through a celestial bureaucracy where she is a valuable but ill-treated pawn. She’s also become the latest point of contention in the oldest case of sibling rivalry in history… But she’ll worry about all that later. Right now she’s more concerned with learning to kill while staying alive. And saving the soul she’d never quite believed she had.

When you’re learning to hunt demons, homework can be hell… Class is in, but Evangeline Hollis is far from being the star pupil. She’s struggling to get through the required training to be a full-fledged Mark — one of thousands of sinners forced to hunt demons for God. When her class goes on a week-long field trip to an abandoned military base, passing the course suddenly isn’t just a matter of pride… it’s a matter of life and death. There’s a demon hidden among them, killing off Eve’s classmates one by one. As the body count rises, a ragtag team of ghost hunters from a cable TV program unwittingly stumbles into the carnage. Now keeping the Mark system secret competes with the need to keep the “paranormal researchers” alive. INDIGO SPRINGS
TOR, 2009
ISBN: 978-0-76531-947-0
Magic, once the province of fairy tales and big-budget motion pictures, was now an undeniable reality in Indigo Springs. Giant wasps attacked police lines at the site of a hostage crisis as a woman escaped on a flying carpet. Trees grew to impossible heights throughout the town, and dozens went missing; of the thousands who fled their homes, none was able to return. The town of Indigo Springs remained enclosed and inaccessible within a mystical forest. Was the woman known as Sahara Knax really a goddess, or was she merely an opportunistic cult leader capitalizing on a catastrophe not of her making? Knax has taken credit for triggering the so-called “Ecological Apocalypse,” allegedly to warn a careless human race to mend its ways. Can she really lead us to a cleaner, brighter future, or is something more ominous at work?

ONCE UPON A TIME, YESTERDAY
Under The Moon, 2007

Once upon a time, the Brothers Grimm penned a book of morality tales. They weren’t the sanitized fairy tales of the 20th Century, and if they were recited to a child, late at night, it was in an effort to scare him straight. But, it’s the 21st Century, and it’s time to take the magic and mayhem back. Loosely based on Grimms, this is an urban fantasy offering you don’t want to miss.

Which is worse: Having to start life over, or being eaten by a Minotaur? The Library of Athena, Book One Thirteen-year-old Megan Montgomery’s world is falling apart. Her father’s promotion means leaving her whole life in New York behind. She finds herself transplanted to a huge, lonely manor house in the English countryside, with no one for company but the distant staff. Her new school only adds to her misery – neither the girls nor the teachers seem to like her. Then Megan meets three girls who actually talk to her instead of about her, and at first she thinks things are getting better. But the girls seem more interested in the strange rumors that the house is haunted. Desperate to make friends, Megan invites them to sleep over for the weekend. A discovery of a cryptic poem, a key and a diary written by the builder of the manor – an eccentric archaeologist – turns the sleepover into a treasure hunt. Clues lead the girls to believe the Parthenon holds a great secret – and suddenly they find themselves sucked into one man’s version of Ancient Greece. The only way home is to find an object thought to be mere legend. If they survive that long.

THE CHOCOLATIER’S WIFE

Tasmin, William’s wife to be, was chosen by a spell, as all wives and husbands are chosen. It’s a nice, tidy way to find a reasonable mate for almost everyone. Unfortunately, Tasmin is from the North, a place of magic and strange ritual, and William is from the South, where people pride themselves on being above the kind of insanity practiced by the Northerners, which has nothing to do with the fact that most people in the South have lost their ability to practice magic. William doesn’t seem in a hurry to send for Tasmin, for which none of his family blame him. After all, she’s a barbarian. She, on the other hand, would like to know what’s keeping him. When he’s framed for murdering his patron, Tasmin takes matters into her own hands, harnessing the wind to bring her to William’s side. She’s gotten to know Wiliam from his letters. He’s not a murderer and she’s going to help him prove it. William, incarcerated for a crime he didn’t commit, is shunned by his family for the embarrassment, and for giving up the family shipping business for foolishness, and for saddling them with a Hag for a wife, which means he can’t protect Tasmin from his family’s cold dislike of his barbiaran wife to be but that’s not the worst of it. Someone out there doesn’t like him and is begining to dislike Tasmin almost as much, and that someone isn’t at all averse to making sure William and Tasmin aren’t around long enough to celebrate their wedding. Tasmin, of course, has other plans.
