Billing FAQs

What payment methods are available?

You can pay for your membership with a recurring PayPal subscription, a one-time PayPal payment, a one-time credit or debit card payment processed by PayPal, or by check.

If you choose to pay through any of the methods that utilize PayPal, you’ll be directed to the PayPal site when you register. At that time, you can tell PayPal that you want the subscription to recur automatically in one year, indicate if you want to pay by credit or debit card through PayPal, or tell PayPal to make the payment a one-time only payment.

If you wish to pay by check, please send an e-mail to money@broaduniverse.org to receive instructions for how to make your membership payment by check. Please note that this payment method can take time to implement because of mailing and check clearance times. If you are using a check to pay a renewal and your membership is not renewed within 3 days after its expiration, your information will be removed from public view and your access to the website's Members Only sections will be revoked. To avoid this, please allow 2 weeks for processing your check (U.S. accounts only) and let us know in the e-mail that your membership is about to expire.

Please note: We can only accept checks in US Dollars drawn on US Banks because of prohibitive bank transaction fees for overseas checks. We cannot accept money orders for the same reason.

I live outside the U.S.  How can I pay for my membership?

Members living outside of the U.S. will need to use PayPal to pay for their memberships.  We cannot accept foreign currency or checks from overseas banks.

Can I pay by credit or debit card on an annual, recurring basis?

PayPal will not set up a recurring payment schedule for payments made through them that draw funds from a credit or debit card. If you want a recurring subscription, you’ll need to pay through PayPal. Note, however, that you can set up your PayPal account to automatically debit your bank account, which is the same thing as using your debit card.

After I pay, will I have immediate access to the Broad Universe website?

If you pay via PayPal or by credit/debit card (via PayPal), you will have access once PayPal processes your payment. You’ll receive an e-mail and a link to register on the Broad Universe site.

If you pay via check, you’ll need to send us the check. Once it’s cleared, we’ll send you an e-mail with a registration link.

What is the benefit of a recurring subscription?

Registering or renewing with a recurring subscription guarantees your content remains visible to the public and that you have uninterrupted access to the Members Only sections of the site. Renewal is automatic, so you don’t need to worry about being away from e-mail or forgetting to make the payment. You'll be notified one week before the next recurring payment is scheduled to be charged to your PayPal account. At that time or at any time before your membership expires, you can choose to cancel the subscription directly through PayPal.

I’m nervous about storing my payment information on the website.

Broad Universe does not store ANY payment information on its website. When you pay through PayPal, you are directed to PayPal, where you will need to login to authorize the payment. Only PayPal has your bank or credit card information. They do not share that information with Broad Universe. We receive a transaction ID associated with your PayPal e-mail address to indicate that your payment has cleared the PayPal system.

I have a recurring PayPal subscription. I want to be sure I have money in my account when PayPal takes the payment. Do you notify me of my renewal date?

When you login, you can go to the Member Gateway and see the renewal date in the Account Management section.

Our membership system also will send you an e-mail reminder of the date the payment will be charged to PayPal. In fact, you’ll receive a couple of notices (one week before renewal and again a couple of days before renewal). If you have an active recurring subscription at PayPal, the payment will be taken on the date indicated in the e-mail and in the Account Management section.

I set up my membership as a recurring payment. I’d rather pay once each year. How do I cancel my subscription?

At any time before your membership expires, you can choose to cancel the recurring subscription directly through PayPal.

What happens if I cancel my recurring subscription?

If you choose to cancel your recurring subscription, you will not receive a renewal notice via e-mail, as renewal notices are triggered by PayPal notifications.  When you login, you can go to the Member Gateway and see the renewal date in the Account Management section.

What happens if my membership expires?

Your membership will remain active through the end of your membership year (for 365 days).  When your membership expires, your content will be removed from the site, and your access to Members Only areas will be revoked.

Please note: Reinstating an expired membership requires registering from scratch and uploading your content (such as book listings) again. Therefore, we strongly encourage you to use the recurring membership payment method.

Can I change my billing method when I renew?

Yes. If you have a subscription but want to renew using a credit or debit card via PayPal, a one-time PayPal payment, or check, just cancel your subscription at PayPal. You’ll need to make the payment manually before your current membership expires.

Please note: If you have been moderating a forum, leading a team in a private group (RFR Organizer, Dealer's Table Organizer, Team Lead, Coordinator), or serving as a website editor/administrator, please send an e-mail to web@broaduniverse.org so that we can renew your permissions to access the areas necessary for you to continue your much-appreciated volunteer service to Broad Universe's membership.

If you previously paid by credit or debit card via PayPal, made a one-time payment through PayPal, or paid by check, you can set up a recurring subscription via PayPal by clicking on Renew Your Membership or following the link to renew your membership in the Member Gateway under the Account Management section.
