HAWKMISTRESS!
ISBN: 0-87997-762-0
DAW Books, 1982 (Out of Print)
This book is part of the Darkover series written by the late Marion Zimmer Bradley. The story focuses on Romilly, a young woman who has the MacAran laran that allows her to "connect" with hawks and horses. She leaves her home, rejecting the "kept" life of a noble woman, and faces hardship and danger living life as a man. This is the only Darkover book I've read to date and I read it when I was a teenager. I remember really liking Romilly. I was surprised that the book wasn't about her pursuing some brooding studly prince. She seemed to face the same real life dilemmas that I did. I was expected to live the way my parents wanted but *I* had other desires and dreams that they did not approve of. Even though she could talk with horses and hawks, she still made mistakes, things didn't come too easily to her and I admired her tenacity.

Four stories bring together monster-movie archetypes as you've never encountered them before. The rage of a tormented adolescent is poignantly expressed in "Boobs." A vampire's sessions with a psychiatrist become a contest of wills in "Unicorn Tapestry." Dark magic puts a woman's ugly insecurities on public display in "Evil Thoughts." And a beautiful woman exerts an uneasy control over the temper of a monster in the critically acclaimed "Beauty and the Opera or The Phantom Beast." Suspenseful and thought-provoking, these stories affirm the vitality of these classic demons of our cultural imagination.
